The Egyptians were so advanced that had the idea of calculating time as early as the 3,500BC and they invented the sun clock (sundial). The sundial made it possible to differentiate between and predict morning, afternoon and night. The oldest surviving sun clock was found in the 2013 in the Valley of the Kings. The valley of kings was the burial place of rulers from Egypt new kingdom which dates as far back as the 1,500BC.

This sundial had one day divided into 10 sections, each having two twilight hours which represented morning and evening. The equipment had a rod with twelve demarcations around it, when placed under the sun the shadow of the rod will let you know the exact time of the day.

These till this modern time has not gone out of style and it’s still considered very useful till his very present hour. Cosmetics and makeup can be dated as far as 4000 BC when the Egyptians used it for aesthetic and salubrious reasons. It was worn by both men and women regardless of their social status.

Kohl was the name given to the ointment in which they used to do their eye make-up. The kohl was formed by putting together malachite and galena (black ointment form by mixing soot with a lead mineral) to form a greenish pigmented substance. The kohl was applied by making use of a small stick similar the use of the eye liners that women use to apply eye make-up these days. The ancient Egyptians painted their upper eyelids and draw across a line from the corner of their eyes to outwardly to the sides.

The ancient Egyptians believed that applying cosmetics was a form of magic and also a healing procedure for the sick. The pyramids are mathematically symmetrical in height, size and location to each other and issue was that they just never saw their knowledge of mathematics to be a theoretical one.

As early as 2,700 BC the Egyptians came up with the idea of the earliest numeration system of five numbers at least and the oldest mathematical text was found in Egypt in 2,000BC, one that was called the Moscow Mathematical Papyrus.

Now you know that the ancient Greeks never invented mathematics but only developed, improved and took better recordings on what the Egyptians came up with.

Ancient Egyptians ate a lot of bread which had loads of gloat and sand in them which constantly cracked their teeth’s enamels. So this case needed a solution which led to invention of toothpicks and toothbrushes to keep their teeth healthy. Their toothbrushes were calved out of woods and same goes with their toothpicks.

They made their toothpastes out of ashes, burnt eggshells, pumice combined with the powder of ox hooves.



Back then, the ancient Egyptians fell of the wrong foot with the idea that bad breath was a symptom of poor immune system or bad health and decided to create mints that could help suppress bad odor. The first breath mints were formed out of the mixture of myrrh, frankincense, cinnamon and boiled honey. The mints really helped deal with the unpleasant odor that came from their mouths.

The ancient Egyptians believed in the afterlife, plenty gods and goddesses which made to actually start the process of mummification (to preserve the human body from decaying). They whole heartedly believed that when a Pharaoh dies his life energy (ka) would move from his body to another realm temporarily so it was important to them to preserve the body from decaying when the spirit returns. The process of mummification included using the mixture of water and palm wine to clean the bodies and carefully removing all the internal organs which were placed in jars. The only organ they would not move was the heart.

Each of these organs had to be placed in their own separate jars. They had just four jars in total for each body where they put the intestines, stomach, lungs and also the liver. After the processes, they would then wrap the bodies with linen and each had a special room or space to be placed in the Egyptian pyramids. Beside the wrapped they also placed amulets which we considered to be their form of lucky charms to give protection from evil.

In 1922, the famous mask of the mummy that belonged to king Tutankhamun was discovered in one of the pyramids were his was buried.

The ancient Egypt made use of writing materials named Papyrus where they used mostly red and black ink to make markings and drawings on the thick paper. The black ink was the often used one for writing in hieroglyphs. This ink was very black like carbon black and could not deteriorate when been applied over the papyrus to write.

To get this carbonated ink they will burn oil or wood and then use water to mix the residue to form the ink. They also did use other materials like yellow ochre and malachite to form the pigments. The arsenic pigments like orpiment and realgar were also used to develop colors like red and yellow which most often faded when exposed to direct sunlight.

Most of their writing was in codes that mostly only them could read and translate. As the Egyptians believed in so many gods, they also did believe that writing was invented by god Thoth and thus gave name to their script calling it “the words of gods”.

Writing in Egypt dates far as 3,400 BC, although most of their writings in the beginning were in pictorial forms as it was later being modified into abstract forms.
